May Wants In

Elizabeth May, Green Party Leader, wants in on the debates during the next election. She's even willing to take legal action to make it happen. I, for one, wouldn't mind if she was in them.

From an article by Abbas Rana in The Hill Times:

"If the consortium of TV networks doesn't include Green Party Leader Elizabeth May in the highly-publicized TV leaders' debates in the next election campaign, she says she will call on Canadians to put help reverse the move and is also threatening legal action.

"Well, I think I'll have to ask Canadians to do what they did last time and deluge media with the demand that I be included. Court action was possible last time, I suppose it would be possible again," Ms. May told The Hill Times last week."

Where's the line? The Greens have never elected a single member and only got in last time on a technicality when a disgraced Liberal MP defected to the Greens. If the Greens are in who else? What's the line? 5% of the popular vote? 10%? Or is it just those parties that have a history of helping the Liberals?

They should all want May in on the debates, for the simple reason that she is the one thing that makes it watchable. She was dynamite last time... so direct and sensible amidst all the bafflegab.

Harper is probably torn. On the one hand, support for May bleeds support from the Liberals, so he should want her there. On the other hand, she was deliciously merciless with him last time. He'd be droning on and on in his condescending sing-song voice and you'd hear her say in the background, "That's a lie." "Not true." Sometimes the way he glared at her made me think he was fantasizing about smacking her upside the head.

I, for one, am much more likely to watch the whole thing if Elizabeth May is there.

...Oh, now that I think of it, she wasn't the only good participant. Duceppe was good too.
